New research results on improved treatments for various forms of blood cancer, such as multiple myeloma or acute myeloid leukemia, are presented by experts at the Congress of the European Hematology Association in Copenhagen. Participants are also engaged in critical debate of issues such as the relation between the pharmaceutics industry and scientists.
The European Hematology Association (EHA) as it gathers for its annual conference in Copenhagen is keen to emphasize the importance it attaches to continuous education of practitioners in the field. The new special fellowship program it has inaugurated to help young hematologists in east Europe profit from working at west European institutions is the latest example of that goal. It is also a facet of the EHA Curriculum Passport, which offers hematologists certification of their individual competences. The EHA is also pleased to announce that this year’s conference offers VODcasting (video-on-demand) of sessions, a tool which has already proved its value.
On the European level EHA is focused on emphasizing the approach of patient care in hematology from an integrated view point. Therefore the relations with the EU will be intensified. Issues in need of attention are the funding of research and regulatory affairs.
Hematological diseases are more widespread than is commonly assumed. Malignant blood disorders such as leukemia or lymphoma are newly diagnosed each year in more than 175,000 people in the European Union and more than 270,000 people in Europe as a whole. Several millions suffer from non-malignant blood diseases such as anemia and thrombosis. At the European Hematology Association Congress in Copenhagen , Denmark , experts share the results of new research on improved therapies for disorders such as low blood platelet count, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia.
Two young Italian hematologists have been selected as this year's recipients of joint American Society of Hematology-European Hematology Association international fellowships. This is only the second time these fellowships are awarded. The intention is to give exceptional researchers additional opportunities to develop their expertise and establish international networks by working outside their home countries. This year's recipients are Dr Serena Kimi Perna of San Raffaelle Scientific Institute and Dr Lapo Alinari from the Seragnoli Institute of Hematology and Oncology.
It's now few days until the EHA Congress, the European Hematology Association annual meeting, taking place from Thursday, 12th to Sunday, 15th June 2008 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
